5 Quick Self Care Ideas for Better Health

I’m still trying to combat stress at home.  Sometimes I forget to do something for myself.  I often think “Oh I’ll do that tomorrow.”  Then when tomorrow comes you put it off just one more day. You get the point.  So I am once again trying to get myself to do a little nurturing for myself.

Here are five things I am going to do this month for myself.  It’s a little starting point to dive deep into some new ideas and care of the self.  Do you have any quick self care tips you would like to share?  Let us know in the comments.  While you think on it, here are my five for this month:

  1. Do five minutes of stillness.  I know people who meditate rave about meditation.  I however, find it very difficult and a waste of time which irritates me more.  So I have decided to try just five minutes of stillness.  I wont be listening to music or television.  I won’t be sleeping or moving about.  Just still.  Fingers crossed I get this one accomplished!
  2. Get some sun.  I’m a natural redhead.  I also have a ton of allergies.  I try to limit my exposure to the great outdoors.  Even with all my sensitivities we all need some sun. I could try to get mine with the five minutes of stillness or perhaps reading a book or eating.
  3. Do a deep conditioning treatment on my hair.  Use a buildup remover and then a deep conditioner packet and let it sit.  Time to make the hair healthy and shiny.
  4. Send a quick email to a friend.  We are all so busy and have so many different schedules to follow, personal interactions sometimes falls by the wayside.  Drop a quick line to someone you haven’t spoken to lately.  Keep those lines of communication open.
  5. Chose one new type or new piece of music to listen to.  If you like rap try classical, into country try trance.  You never know what you might enjoy if you try!

Those are five for this month.  Which ones are you going to try?  Remember to let me know below.

Goal Updates

alisa-anton-393305

In September I posted a list of goals that I wanted to accomplish.  I thought that I had written fairly small and easy goals for myself. I guess I was wrong.  I’m going to go through each goal and tell you how far I got.   How are you at accomplishing your goals?  I am usually really good at it.  However, like most people there are some things that I just want to put off.

The first thing on the list was drink more water.  As I said before, I hate water.  I really do. I haven’t done very well on this goal at all.  I have started having a glass of water with breakfast.  I still need to incorporate more.  I have started trying to drink LaCroix water.  I’m not 100% on it yet.  I will keep searching for a new flavor.

Number two goal was walking the dog.  I’ve made zero progress on this goal.  My dog has not been happy with me.  She now ignores me when I call her in from the yard.  She just gives me a sort of “fuck you” look.  I thought it was because we got cats.  It could be the no walks though.  My husband walks her.  I haven’t been.  I am a bad dog mommy.

Eat more fruits and veggies was my third goal.  This is one I’ve been able to achieve.  It really has helped that we decided to subscribe to Hello Fresh.  They always have great veggies with their meals.  This is not a paid sponsorship.  I pay for it myself.  The variety has really helped my well being too.

In the fourth spot it was working on my blog more.  I have done this a little bit.  I’ve made some minor headway.  My goal was to have a regular time to blog per day.   Hopefully, I can get that to work.

Fifth spot is read more.  I love reading.  Given what has been going on in my life over the last couple of years, reading has gone by the wayside.  My to be read bookshelf is overflowing.  I need to get back on track reading wise.  I am currently reading “The Art of Living Danishly.”

Sleep was my sixth goal.  I’ve always been an insomniac.  I cannot remember ever having a relaxing or refreshing sleep.  Recently, I’ve been put on some additional sleep medication and it is helping a bit.  I am sleeping longer but tired when I get up.  Hopefully, it will all work out soon.

Self-Care.  One of my additional goals was selfcare.  I know it’s such a buzz word but it is needed in my life now.  I’m just not doing a very good job lately.  I need to register myself for some massages.  My chiropractor said my muscles are really stiff and need to be worked. I need to get on that.  I also need to schedule everything else due to the holiday season.  Appointments book up fast.

My last goal was to go places.  I need to get out of the house.  I’ve done pretty well in October.  Fall leaves, pumpkin walks and other things.  I hope to keep this up for November.

What goals have you been working on?

5 Quick Self Care Ideas

Self Care is the latest trend in the blog world. There are whole blogs devoted to the concept.  If you are like me you need some serious self-care but don’t always know what to do. Each month I will give you some different ideas for relaxing and recharging.  Sometimes we need some gentle reminders to take care of ourselves.

  1. Read a chapter out of that book on your nightstand. You know the one you have been meaning to read but haven’t gotten around to doing.
  2. Take a quick 10 minutes to declutter a spot in your home. Pick something you see everyday to clear like your coat closet or medicine cabinet.
  3. Turn the phone off. Easy right?  It’s harder than you think. We use our phones for everything today. Even an hour of no phone use can help you unwind.
  4. Talk a quick walk around the block.  You don’t have to break a sweat, just get away from it all for a short time.
  5. Take a bath.  I personally love a long, hot bath. You can pick a favorite bath bomb or bubble bath, light a candle, and put on some relaxing music to enjoy.

What do you like to do for self care?  Let me know!

3 Things About Me

unsplash51

File this under getting to know your blogger. What are three things that I can tell you about me?  Hmmm, I wish I could say I have something amazing and earth shattering, but I don’t. I’d love to be the person to tell you that I love skydiving, or every evening my family and I sing songs around a campfire while sipping gourmet hot coco and s’mores.  I don’t. Believe me, I wish I did!!

  1. My favorite childhood book was by Judy Blume called “Starring Sally J. Friedman as herself.” I must have read that book over 50 times. Once the librarian told me that I couldn’t check it out because I had to let someone else check it out. So that book sat in the library until a week past and I could check it out again.
  2. I am a cat person.  I have a dog, but I am a cat person.  I have always loved cats.  When I was a child I would walk around the fields around my house looking for stray cats, hoping one will come out and play with me.   I was finally allowed to have a cat in junior high school.  Once that cat died I didn’t have another.  Too busy. When my own son wanted to get a cat we looked at various animal shelters.  Unfortunately, I started to sneeze and get a stuffy nose. So I went and had myself tested.  Yup, allergic to cats! Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
  3. If I won the lottery I would do two things.  One is travel. The other is go back to school.  Okay, most people would travel.  I also love to learn.  I don’t know if I’d get a degree but I would definitely take classes in areas that interest me.

What is your favorite childhood book?  Do you have a favorite animal?  What would you do if you won the lottery?  Let me know in the comments!
