5 Self Care Goals for April

It’s been a crazy  year so far for me.  Illness and family issues have had me busy for a very long time. I have had a hard time taking care of everyone else much less myself.  I need to start taking better care of myself.  Of course, I’ve been trying to take better care of myself all the time.  I need to make some major changes but how will that happen?  Stay tuned.  Meanwhile, here are five things I am going to try this month.

  1. Take a walk.  Between family obligations, illness and weather I didn’t do any type of workout.  My dog is feeling this pain more acutely than I am. I need to get back to this.
  2. Stretch.  It’s a quiet and simple way to get moving and make yourself feel better.
  3. Read something silly or fun.  While gossip isn’t considered nice, we all need a little celebrity gossip from time to time. It’s fun to see and imagine how the other half lives.
  4. Light a candle.  I always did this when I came home from work.   It was a great way to signal it was time to relax.
  5. Make a bucket list.  Don’t put on things you think you should have on your list. Say read the 100 greatest books of all time unless you really want to.  Put your items in order.  Then write what you need to do to do the first three.

I hope this little post reminds you to take a few minutes each day to refresh and renew.  Be a little kinder and little more gentle with yourself.  Until next month.

5 Self Care Ideas for December

Holiday Season is such a busy time.  Kids have school projects coming due.  There are band concerts and chorus shows to attend.  Have you got all your baking done yet?  Then the meal planning and the visiting schedule have yet to be worked out.  Oh, and how are those resolutions coming along?  It never ends does it?  It’s easy to get overworked and stressed out on a daily basis.  I know it happens a lot to me.  I can easily forget unless I write the reminders down.

Here are five quick and easy ways to take care of yourself this month.

1. Turn off all the phones and electronic devices for an evening.  Play a board game as a family or go see the lights.  Plan something besides the norm.  We all need a change of pace once in awhile.

2.Don’t put up all your decorations.  Go through them and donate what you really don’t want or need. We were pushed into this by accident.  We adopted two cats this summer so this is their first Christmas.  We didn’t want the ornaments to be ruined so we only put on lights and ribbon.  The ribbon has already been pulled off by the cats.  Thankfully they have not tried to climb the tree yet.

3. Just say no.  You don’t need to go to your cousins house for the day after Christmas extended family celebration.  You don’t have to go to your families Christmas and then drive like a bat out of hell to your spouses family 4 hours later.  Take a holiday off.

4.Give less gifts.  Your sanity and wallet will thank you.  Does your sister really need more potholders?  I know they have kitties on them and that just screams her but let someone else get them. In my family we have this rule that once a person hits 18 they no longer get gifts.  If you are over 18 the next time you get a gift is for graduation, marriage, new home, or birth of a child.  No more holidays.

5. Have a different meal than normal.  A huge Christmas meal with all the trimmings?  I know you can make it potluck.  I just get tired of it all.  So how about a lasagna or pizza instead of ham or turkey?  It doesn’t have to be crazy!

I hope these self care ideas help.  I know they technically are not traditional self care ideas like getting a pedicure.  Sometimes you just have to cut down or not do anything as a form of self preservation.  Good luck.

I am so stressed right now it isn’t even funny.  So much is going on in my life that is severe, hard, and any other number of adjectives.  I just want to curl up in a little ball.  Know the feeling?  This is when you need to buckle down and take care of yourself.  Here are 5 more ideas to help you keep stress at bay.

  1. Do a guided meditation.  Try the calm app on your phone.  My son even likes it!
  2. Watch a funny film.  My personal stupid funny movie is “Ferris Buehler’s Day Off.” Save Ferris!!
  3. Put on Pajamas.  Comfort always makes you feel better.
  4. Play with your pet.  Pets can help lower your blood pressure.  Well, at least that is what I heard.  Besides who doesn’t think a dog with a tennis ball in it’s mouth is cute?
  5. Ask for help.  This is the hardest for me. A lot of times I am too embarrassed to ask. Too exhausted.  I just think I can do this faster and better.  However, sometimes you need a break.  You need to save your own sanity.

What are some ways you like to relax?

My goals for September.

negativespace-17

In my old blog I used set goals every month.  I’m going to try to do it again.  I say try as my life since last October has been crazy. I don’t know what the future holds.  I’m just trying to move my life along.  Lately, I have been wondering what to do with the rest of my life.  I suppose you could cal l it a mid-life crisis, but I don’t think that is what it is.  I am at a point where constant care of my family will slowly be ending. What am I suppose to do?  What do I want to do?  I’m not sure.  What I thought I was going to do in my 20’s did not work out for a variety of reasons.  Some my fault, others not.  My enjoyments are not the same either.  What do I like?  I’m not sure.  So when setting my goals.  I’m trying to move my life forward. Hopefully, I can find a path to my future somewhere.

  1. Drink more water.  Honestly, I hate water.  I know it’s good for you, but ugh, I’d rather drink Coke.
  2. Walk the dog.  The dog needs to lose weight and so do I.
  3. Eat more fruit and veggies.  I buy them, now I just have to eat them.  Goals right?
  4. Establish a time to work on the blog for a regular basis.
  5. Read more. Put the cell phone down Christine.
  6. Go a few more places. I need to get out of the house!  Don’t get me wrong.  I love my house, but I’m a really boring person.
  7. Get a decent nights sleep. Work on that sleep routine.
  8. More self care.  I really let this one go.  I am feeling it as increase physical pain and stomach upset.

Do you have monthly goals?  What are they for this month?  Feel free to share below.

5 Self Care Ideas

Self care is something I really struggle with.  There is too much to do, and not enough time to get things done. Of course, I always think that I am the only one that can do these tasks.  Problem is, I am often the only one.  I don’t deal with stress well.  I feel it in my head, shoulders, and stomach.  Now, due to prolonged stress I even feel it in my legs.  That’s a new one.  So I am working on relaxing as much as I can.  Here are a few things that I do to relax.

  1. Take a deep breath.  I take 5 minutes, usually in the car, where I turn off all media and take deep breaths to reset.  Try it when you are waiting in your car.
  2. Journal.  I have kept a journal since I was 10.  Need some help starting one?  Check out my monthly journal prompts.  A journal can be done in anything.  You can use a journal, plain notebook, loose paper, or a computer.
  3. Go to a rolfer.  Rolfing has really helped me with both pain and stress.  Rolfing works by manipulating the connecting tissue of the body.  After a session I always stand a bit taller.
  4. Call a friend, call your mother, call someone and let it out.  If that isn’t your thing, then just call to catch up.  I will get your mind off it.
  5. Have a short stay somewhere. Go for a night or two to a hotel.  Spend some time alone.  You need it.

Here are five new ways to pamper yourself this month.  Which are you going to try?

  1. Paint your nails. You could also get someone else to.  I prefer to go every other month for a pedicure.  I just sit back and relax for the hour.
  2. Cuddle.  Sort of self explanatory. Cuddle your cat. Cuddle you dog. Cuddle you kid. Cuddle your husband.  You get the idea.
  3. Try a new food.  No need to go extreme.  It could be trying a new fruit, a new flavor of gum or you can take a three month subscription to a food service.  Go online and find a new style of cuisine to try.
  4. Give yourself a facial mask.
  5. Listen to a new podcast.
