I have been writing a few times in the last several months that I am working on a capsule wardrobe. It’s slowly coming together. First I worked on what I am wearing and not wearing in my closet. Once I wore something I would turn the hanger around and hook it on the rod from the backside. After a month passed, I took anything that wasn’t worn out of the closet and donated it.
I did keep a few things that I had not worn. Why? Because they are for special occasion dressing. A nice dress for a wedding or out to eat, a suit for funerals etc. They are only a few pieces so it doesn’t take up much room.
Now I am deciding if things look good on me. There are a few items that I am not sure about. I think a lot of it has to do with what is available in my size. As the next year progresses, I am hoping to lose weight. If that happens there will be several changes in the near future to the wardrobe.
Often, you will see pie charts when talking about capsule wardrobes. Mostly those pie charts are to show what colors a person plans on using. Generally, they start with neutral tones as a base. I don’t believe that you have to do that. If you want red as one of your base colors go for it. Fortunately, I love neutral tones. I am planning on my wardrobe being in the following colors: black, navy, azure blue, charcoal grey, and true green. The black, navy and azure are at this stage going to be 45% of my wardrobe, with charcoal grey and true green being the remaining 15%. I would have preferred charcoal to be a higher percentage but it is a very hard color to find. Most of the grey out there is a light or heathered grey. Not what I am looking for at all. I want that dark grey. What colors are in your wardrobe? The percentages are not hard and fast. If next fall they come out with a ton of charcoal grey that is what I will be buying.
I also did not keep only those colors. I have a cream colored fisherman’s sweater that I love and kept. So on occasion I will have an off color every so often.
Once I decided on color, I needed to think of what type of life I live. I am no longer part of the working world. So I got rid of most of my work clothing over ten years ago. I have one suit for when the occasion calls for. Not much beyond that. I spend the vast majority of my time at home or running my son around to various doctors or school functions.
Then maybe the last twenty percent of my time is for going out, being with friends, or relaxing at home. I think being at home is the hardest part of dressing. It’s so easy to just wear sweats or leggings all the time. I am guilty of the blue jeans and t-shirt combo. I wear that a lot. So next is to try and dress up the same old clothes I always wear. You will be seeing the results of this in my Instagram feed @thenorthernstar_ck and this blog. I hope you will stay tuned.
It took me a long time to decide on the capsule wardrobe. I was hoping to lose weight, couldn’t find clothes I liked in my size etc. How will the capsule wardrobe help me? I’m not sure yet.
Let me know below if you have also done or are doing the capsule wardrobe idea. How is it going for you?
